Skein worked closely with the Art Gallery of South Australia to present a holistic thematic to the exhibit design for more than 65 Impressionist masterpieces from the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. This landmark exhibition for the Art Gallery of South Australia (held March-July 2018) was housed in the Elder Wing, one of the few 19th century light filled gallery spaces in Australia. Two 3 metre high mirrored arches bookend the exhibition and echo the architectonic forms of the Elder Wing in a playful and subtle manner. Furniture pieces were also designed for this custom installation, including a circular 3 metre diameter ottoman in grey velvet with deep buttoning encircling Alfred Gilbert’s Eros sculpture.
The brief also included a pop up store to house specific Impressionism themed merchandise. As a response, Skein adopted a deliberate, all white, clean, crisp aesthetic, accented by colourful perforated steel risers and custom stands. The variety of hues, tones, and materiality on display in the various books, scarves, jewellery, and other merchandise echo and respond to the artwork in the exhibition.
