INTRODUCTION
{ Skein : A succession or series of similar or interrelated things. }
Our approach to design and communication at Skein is genuine, respectful, and authentic.
Projects that are highly individualised, culturally significant, inclusive, and educational are our passion - project outcomes that are one-of-a-kind and timeless.
Our project portfolio includes residential and commercial architecture, gallery and exhibition design, public art and interpretation, and furniture design. To inform and enhance project development, we involve tradespeople, fabricators, and professionals in the industry early on in each project. We are able to confidently investigate possibilities and provide customised design responses without relying on standard solutions.
While Skein operates within a thriving local design community, it is aware of its position in relation to national professionals and contractors that share similar values regarding design quality, research, craftsmanship recognition, and inclusivity.
Among the project partners that Skein has worked with are The Art Gallery of South Australia, the Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, Ernabella Arts Incorporated, AnanguKu Arts, the Adelaide Central School of Art, the Musée d'Orsay, the Adelaide City Council, Getty Images, and the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute.
PORTFOLIO
Residential
Skein are growing a portfolio of unique residential projects including the 2024 AIA Residential Award winning Coast House, Stealth House, Sun Room and Sycamore Cottage. Projects such as Dairy House and Pickling Room are currently being developed and delivered. We assist private clients in navigating the complexities of undertaking a new home or extension project by creating individualised briefs and producing detailed drawing packages. For each project, we typically produce a detailed brief, concept design, 3D visualisations, architectural documentation, architectural specifications, and selections for materials and finishes in conjunction the client.
Cultural Institutions
Skein have collaborated extensively with a variety of cultural organisations and non-profit arts organisations to create individual and distinctive gallery and exhibition spaces. When it comes to shaping all aspects of an exhibition and the administrative services that support them, from ticketing requirements to archival best practices, engaging with and learning from experts in a variety of arts-related fields is essential. On completed exhibition designs, we have had the pleasure of working with Arts institutional bodies and Arts industry stakeholders: the Adelaide Central School of Art, the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, Adelaide City Council, Artlab, Illuminate Adelaide, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Insite Arts, the South Australia Living Artists, AnanguKu Arts, Ernabella Arts Incorporated, Anindilyakwa Artists, ACE Gallery and Carriage Works (Sydney).
Commercial
Skein have completed a number of exciting commercial projects, such as the Adelaide Central School of Arts Southern Courtyard Redevelopment, the Art Gallery of South Australia Gallery Store and Elder Wing of Australian Art, the Tell Henry coffee shops on both Gilbert Street and Rundle Street, Station Lane at Adelaide Casino, and the Karatta Wines Robe tasting room.
